Canon Ink Jet Cartridges, Canon Pixma,
Canon BJC and Canon BCI
Over the last few years, Canon has been viewed as the poor relation to both HP, Lexmark and Epson in the inkjet printer market.
It's always produced good printers but was generally a little way behind. The BJC/ Pixma/ BCI has gone a long way to redress the balance. It's a hefty beast and is almost as wide (or small) as the A3 Xerox DocuPrint, despite the fact that it's only an A4 unit.
It continues the Canon tradition of placing the paper at the rear of the unit in a semi-upright feeder.
The "output tray" is little more than a flat piece of plastic that slides out of the front to remind you not to put potted plants in the space when the printer isn't being used.
Like almost all consumer-level printers these days, it sports just two buttons, one for power and one for sheet feeding. Switching the unit on results in a minute or so of internal chattering and print-head movement, a habit the canon bjc shares with the Epson units.
The BJC is seven-colour, with separate black and CMY/light CMY cartridges. Raising the cover reveals a blue button that bring the heads to one side for replacing.
The black cartridge and print heads are one unit, but the colour cartridge is two-piece, so you can replace the ink tank and head separately. There's a specific photo-colour cartridge supplied that replaces the standard colour unit for photo prints.
The canon bjc, bci and pixma' s driver options are very comprehensive, offering two levels of head cleaning to save ink and full control over resolution, colour balance and dithering schemes.
The canon bjc's performance wasn't totally consistent on plain paper, producing fairly average mono text and having a hard time printing a business text and graphics without banding.
But more complex plainpaper documents suited it better: it produced the best performance in the Corel Draw plain-paper test, and produced the best plain-paper photo.
Printing on transparencies gave solid blacks with very little cracking or smearing. With coated paper, performance was very impressive and consistent. Only the Epson 7xx and 9xx managed to better it, and the same was true of colour photos on glossy paper.
The PowerPoint presentation slide showed very smooth colour gradation and the text stood out from the background with no bleed.
The exemplary coatedpaper performance of the Epson 9xx makes it a better bet for high-end presentations but, if you want a solid, all-round performer, the Canon BJC, Canon BCI and Canon Pixma is well above average.
