INKJETS OFFER HIGH QUALITY AT AN UNBEATABLE PRICE
While inkjet technology is the new kid on the block, since the early 1990s its position as the dominant technology for cost-effective colour printing has become increasingly established.
With steady improvements in both speed and output quality. Since our last colour inkjet round-up in issue 47, the changes made have been in the form of refinements rather than new developments.
The main advantage of inkjet technology over laser is the ability to produce colour output at an affordable price. The cheapest colour laser printers available cost around £500, with a high-quality unit costing around £1000. This puts them out of reach for a great many users.
Moreover, the quality of a colour laser can't compete with high-resolution prints on coated paper from the latest inkjets. Inkjets are winning the battle with laser printers on two fronts.
The first area of success is in the home, where inkjets are attractive because of their low price and first rate photographic reproduction. They're proving to be a key component in making the concept of the digital darkroom a reality.
In addition, we take a look at dye sublimation printers as an alternative technology for digital photography in DIY photo printing on pI33a.
The second front is in the SoHo environment. Here the mono laser is still the printer of choice due to competitive pricing in the face of mass adoption of ink jets.
But, thanks to increased speeds and enhanced text reproduction, inkjets are now viable solutions for the office. The colour inkjet's affordability makes it an ideal complement to a laser printer for occasions when a report requires colour or photo reproduction.
Some printers in our round-up review such as the Xerox DocuPrint and HP 2000 have optional network capabilities to allow them to be even more productive in an office environment.
However, the cost of consumables remains high, so bear that in mind when deliberating on whether to choose a laser printer or an inkjet.
