Photoshop 4 Tests
We used a Photo CD image from a Corel PhotoCD to test each printer's ability to reproduce photorealistic bitmaps. We chose an image that contained bright, natural tones, subdued colours and areas of high detail, since , these are all difficult for printers to reproduce accurately.
With a wide range of shades and intensities in the image, it's possible to evaluate photorealistic output across the colour range. In addition, areas of high contrast between dark and light tones help demonstrate ink bleeding, banding and colour graduation problems.
Colour Toner Cartridge Test
The colour toner cartridge test assessed ability to reproduce industry-standard colours. The test consisted of six bars, each filled with a different tone. We choose three Pantones and pure cyan, yeUow and magenta.
The printers should be able to reproduce pure colours. Any units that have problems in this area should be avoided if photo image prints are required. The printed versions are compared with reference samples of the colour tones and assessed for accuracy. This test was performed on coated paper only.
Microsoft Word Test Paper
Monochrome Text TextIn this test, we timed how long it took for a printer to produce 25 pages of black text. The text consisted of a variety of fonts and sizes in bold, italic and normal typefaces.
This is representative of standard test use in a small office environment. If printers could print in both composite and true black, we set them to print true black.
Inkjet printers that only hold one ink cartridge, either colour or black, were tested with the black cartridge. Printers were evaluated for print speed and their ability to produce sharply defined text, with smooth curves and no ink bleeding.
This test has most relevance for situations where a printer has to act as both a standard monochrome printer and a colour output unit. Standard office paper was used for this test.
Colour Text Test
This test was intended to measure how well a printer integrated coloured objects into a standard text document - the bread and butter of a colour printer.
Printing black text on a dark grey background tends to trip some primers up, with the results being a solid black box with no discernable text.
To cater for this we embedded a dark grey spreadsheet segment to see which of the printers could resolve enough detail to make the text readable.
We added a chart, some dip-art and integrated coloured text with the black text. We looked for colour text quality, ink bleeding in some of the larger text samples and good contrast between backgrounds and coloured text.
Obviously printers with two cartridges will perform better on this test. Single-cartridge units will have to resort to composite black for the text segments.
This is where the cheaper singlecartridge systems begin to look like a false economy. Standard office paper was used for this test.
