Printers Glossary Jargon Busting

Banding - Bands of discrete colour or tone that appear when a printer can't reproduce a smooth graduation from one colour to another. Instead there are noticeable jumps between one value and the next.
Bleeding - A print distortion where adjacent colours run and merge into one another, sometimes caused by excess ink or over-absorbent paper.
CMYK - Cyan, magenta, yellow and black - the four basic process colours used in conventional colour printing. By overlaying or dithering combinations of these four inks in different proportions, a vast range of colours can be created.
Composite colours - Colours formed by mixing various quantities of cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
Dithering - A halftoning technique/method where several dots of the primary colours are printed in various patterns to give the impression of a larger colour spectrum.
DPI - Dots per inch, the measure of a printer's resolution. The printed dots from a 600 dpi printer are far smaller than the dots created by a 300 dpi printer. As a result, the output is smoother and more detailed, while dithering patterns will deliver more realistic colours.
Feathering - A term used to describe printed text quality. Feathering occurs when deposited ink follows the contours of the paper. Depending on the viscosity of the ink, the rougher the grain of the paper the more pronounced the feathering will be.
GDI - Graphical device interface, the native graphical language of Windows. A GDI compliants printer will print exactly what's displayed on your Windows screen without having to transpose it into a printer language. All the processing happens on the PC, which helps reduce the price of the printer, since image processing circuitry isn't needed.
Halftone - Inkjet printers don't have inks for the entire spectrum of colours; they only have the four process colours. Printers produce other colours by laying down patterns of primary colour dots, varying the pattern and ratio of each colour. This is known as halftoning.
Parallel port - The standard I/O channel for parallel devices, like printers.
PCL - Printer control language - a protocol designed by Hewlett-Packard HP to allow PCs to communicate with its laser printers. Now used by many manufacturers, with the latest release being PCL 6.
Piezo electric - The property of certain crystals that causes them to oscillate when subjected to electrical pressure (voltage).
Pigment inks - While conventional inks are essentially oil-based dyes, pigment inks consist of tiny chunks of solid pigment suspended in a liquid solution. According to their proponents, such as HP which uses them for its inkjet range, pigment inks offer richer, deeper colours, and have less of a tendency to run, bleed or feather.
PostScript - A page description language developed by Adobe. While PostScript is generally used by laser printers, it's also common in high-end inkjet models.
Thermal - A heat-based method of transferring ink onto a page.
True black - Black produced by a separate black ink rather than a mixture of cyan, magenta and yellow.
USB - The universal serial bus is a new interface that supersedes the parallel port. It has a transfer rate of 12Mbits/sec, supports true plug and play and allows hot-swapping of devices. This avoids the need to reboot the PC, making it ideal for printers.
